Greengold is a package targeted towards Arab and Persian society where enjoying a game of cards along side nuts, sweets, tea and coffee is common. The entire package combines a deck of golden cards and pistachios. It will typically be used during a gathering of friends and families.
The branding is in both English and Arabic. The Arabic calligraphy is designed in a way that is attractive and legible to both Arab and non- Arab speakers. Greengold is a sustainable package and can be reused for storing products such as jewellery, coins, and more.
The way the package is designed makes it convenient for users because the deck of cards slide easily out the bottom and an empty compartment slides out from the side allowing users to dispose of the empty pistachio shells.
The reasoning behind the combination of these products is because it makes the package perfect for a night of hanging out with friends. It is compact and portable. The different compartments allow easy accessibility to the products without the need for several unboxing or un-packaging.
Coasters increase the usability of the package in the hang out setting since it can be used for the coffee and tea, or any other drink that would be consumed during the card games. The coasters also contain various information for players - from nutritional information of the pistachios to the rules of different card games commonly played in Arab and Persian society.
The simplicity of the packaging makes it gender-neutral and attractive to a wide demographic, which is important, since this type of product would be attractive for teenagers, adults, and even the elderly. The type of wood used as well as the gold cards and branding design are all carefully chosen and designed to compliment each other and to create a package of elegance that makes it attractive to Arab and Persian society where luxury is valued and sought after.
The placement of the brand on both the lid as well as the sides is intentional in order to make the brand recognizable on shelves in the store.
After extensive research on the product and existing packaging for it, I began brainstorming my design through several sketches.
The design of this package first began with the use of cardboard and with only two levels (one for card slide out and one for pistachio storage that was split in half to offer a place to put the empty kernels)
I then added a swing out compartment for the empty kernels since the previous design of splitting the top compartment in half left users with limited amount of pistachios. With the swing out, the top compartment can now hold even more pistachios.
After deciding to create my package with harder material like wood, I returned to sketching as I planned out the pieces and how it would fit together to create the various compartments.
I then continued to create another prototype with non-bendable cardboard and then with wood.
After creating 4 prototypes, I had a better handle on the technicality of putting the package together with wood.
I also went through several different versions of implementing the branding on the lid of the package until reaching my final branding.
